Synopsis[]

The murder of seven gang members has Vic be teamed with a Latino detective assigned to crack the case.

Plot[]

At a shooting range, a man guns down seven Latinos, one of them a pregnant woman, and the range's proprietor. Vic Mackey and Shane Vendrell meet Ben Gilroy at the scene, where he explains that they will be working with detective Carlos Zamora, prided on his inside knowledge of the Latino gangs, to solve the case. Zamora explains that the dead shooters are part of the Toros gang and the pregnant woman was leader Train Guttierez's girlfriend. The security cameras were purely decorative, forcing Zamora, an ex-Toro, to go directly to them in hopes of finding out who they suspect. Shane informs Vic that the range's teenage custodian did not show up to work that day, while Vic disapproves of Zamora's comfortable nature around the gang, instead forcefully coercing them into telling him about "Wet Willie", a black gangster who has recently been making trouble following his release from jail. Zamora angrily tells him off for interfering with the trust he shares with the Toros, and Vic brushes him off and tells him to investigate the custodian while he and Shane find Willie. Zamora offers to give them Willie's location, but they insist that they can do it themselves. A woman storms into the Barn despite Dutch Wagenbach's insistence that they are busy, demanding to know what is being done to keep the neighborhood safe and citing the rape of her niece by a released convict.

David Aceveda has Julien Lowe practice his testimony against the Strike Team, warning him that if he succeeds, they will lose their jobs. He asks Julien if he can live with that, and Julien sighs that "what's fair for them out there has to be fair for us in here." While staking out, Shane notices a book on autism in Vic's car, but he lies and says Corrine Mackey is reading up on a child in their son's class who has it. When Shane jokingly wonders about the difference between autism and being "retarded," an irritated Vic tells him to shut up.

Julien gives his testimony to Francis Housely and Danny Sofer intercepts him as he leaves, now wanting to help with his case against Vic, but he brushes her off. Willie returns with a friend and Vic orders Shane to keep away the latter. As Willie delivers a bag to his girlfriend's house, he explains to Vic that it is medicine for her ill baby and that his whereabouts of the night can be corroborated by multiple people. Satisfied, Vic returns to find Shane urinating on the other man, having beaten him up for talking back to him, and a nearby elderly couple calls the police as they watch. Enraged, Vic drags Shane back to the car and berates him as they drive away, threatening to remove him from the Strike Team if he does not sort himself out. Claudette Wyms observes Dutch's stress over trying to solve the face-down murders and orders him to take time off, instead pulling a random civilian file. He ends up with a complaint from a man claiming his elderly mother and her friends are being scammed by a psychic for thousands of dollars, the psychic claiming to contact her dead husband. The mother insists that the psychic is not scamming her, although Dutch is skeptical.

Vic, Shane and Zamora regroup, the former explaining that Willie is innocent, but they need to find the shooter before Train exacts revenge on possible innocents. Zamora locates the custodian, who claims to have seen the shooter, through a Toros contact, which Vic again disapproves of. Julien asks Tomas Motyashik to get a job, and he counters by telling Julien to stop pretending to be straight, and that "I'll try if you try." The custodian reveals that the shooter was white and therefore likely not part of any gang. Raoul Jimenez, a representative of the precinct's Latino community, declares the shooting a hate crime and demands the police do something about it, asking them to release the custodian's vague sketch of the shooter to the press. Under pressure, Gilroy allows it. Just as Housely serves Vic a request for an interview, Zamora reports that five Latinos have been shot at a grocery store nearby. Vic meets Danny on the scene, where she explains that the shooter came in, killed everyone they could, and ran, one of the victims being the owner's son. The owner confirms that the shooter was white and got away on foot, so Vic has Shane jot down all nearby license plates and run them.

Dutch and Claudette visit the psychic to bring her in for questioning. She tries to predict that Dutch yearns for someone younger that he works with, but he points out that she could glean that from the way he is dressed and how he composes himself, much to Claudette's amusement. Aceveda brings in Deena to testify about finding the drugs in Shane's truck, but she seems more interested in manipulating the interviewer than being honest. She tries to seduce Aceveda, but he points out that he is happily married, much to her disappointment. She testifies for Housely, her sympathetic demeanor and feigned disapproval of Shane's theft visibly pleasing Aceveda.

Shane finds that the only car nearby whose owner is unaccounted for, belonging to a man named George Michael Klassen, has a half-filled container of bullets inside. A team raids his house to find an elderly couple, Klassen's in-laws, shot to death inside, and his wife and son missing. Klassen's sister denies that he would ever hurt his in-laws, but seems indifferent to the idea of his recent murders, asserting her racist attitude by stating his killing of Latinos would be justified. Shane notices a pool of blood in the store not connected to any of the bodies but finds the back exit oddly clean. Vic brings in the store's staff for questioning, enraging Jimenez. The owner insists that he was telling the full truth when he explained what happened at the shooting, but Vic pressures him into admitting that he knocked Klassen out with a baseball bat outside and gave him to Train after being unable to muster the courage to kill him himself. Vic realizes that Klassen's in-laws were killed after the shooting, meaning that Train killed them and abducted Klassen's family. Gilroy warns Aceveda to lay off Vic, and he counters by showing him the transcripts of Julien and Deena's testimonies.

The psychic invokes the name "Sally" and insists that she did not read Dutch's files when he asks. As Claudette leads her away with the elderly women for questioning, she tells Dutch that "she has a message for you." Vic violently interrogates a Toros member that Zamora was lenient to earlier, but Zamora himself beats the man until he gives up Train's location. Vic and Zamora finds Train about to rape Klassen's wife while he is tied up next to them, and they burst in as he takes her at gunpoint. Zamora begs Train to surrender, but he instead kills Klassen, prompting Vic to shoot him. As Klassen's wife weeps over his body, an enraged Zamora asks Train why he did it, Train insisting that Klassen "had to pay." Zamora considers killing him, but Vic stops him, telling him to let Train go to prison. Vic puts his jacket around Klassen's family and comforts them. Gilroy promises to do something about Vic but asks for a few days to think it over.

Jimenez warns Vic and Zamora that he will fight to keep the Toros who conspired to kill Klassen out of prison, stating that they are also victims. Vic offers Zamora a ride home, but he politely rebuffs him. Danny requests that Julien be transferred to a different officer, but Aceveda asks her to stay with him, as he is going through a "tough time." An angry Gilroy informs Vic of the case being built against him, suggesting Shane take the fall for being the one that got the drugs stolen in the first place. Dutch visits the psychic and asks what Sally had to say to him, who tells him that she says to not give up and that he is the only one still fighting for her. When Dutch asks for more, she invites him to sit down and have a proper session with her, which he does.

Aceveda meets with Jimenez and gives him the file on Vic's case in hopes that he will leak it to the press on his behalf. Vic admits the truth about his autism book to Shane, but asserts that it has only made him love his son more. He promises Shane that he will not give up on him either. Tomas asks Julien for a reference on his job application, which he refuses. Julien promises to continue trying to come out to the people in his life, but warns Tomas that their Christian values will likely prevent them from taking it well. As Tomas starts to give him oral sex, Vic barges in with a warrant to arrest Tomas, and taunts Julien as he leaves.

Episode Title[]

The title refers to the desire of The Toros and the Latino community in Farmington to make killer George Michael Klassen pay for his crimes against their community. After George killed Lucy, the pregnant girlfriend of Train Guttierez, he vowed to make him pay and in the climax of the episode, he held George's wife and son hostage. Also, shop owner Leon gave up George to The Toros after he killed his son Favian because he felt he had to pay.

Notes[]

  • International airdates:
    • Germany: September 15, 2004
    • France: July 18, 2007
  • This is one of two episodes in a row where Curtis Lemansky doesn't appear, although his name still appears in the opening credits.
  • The wife and son of George Michael Klassen are called Myra and Brady respectively. This is probably a reference to real-life killers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, who killed five children in England from 1963 to 1965.
  • George Michael Klassen ended up killing 13 people in total (8 at the gun shop, and 5 at the deli store). Vic Mackey tells Suzie Klassen that he killed 15 people but that was because, at the time, he thought George had killed his in-laws as well.
  • The book that Vic Mackey has in his car is called "Facing Autism: Giving Parents Reasons for Hope and Guidance for Help" and is written by Lynn M. Hamilton.
  • Shane Vendrell calls Trevor "Kunta Kinte" in reference to the black character of the Alex Haley novel, Roots, written in 1977.

Quotes[]

  • Vic Mackey: Are you out of your goddamn mind?
  • Shane Vendrell: No!
  • Vic Mackey: We're trying to prevent the war, not start one, you stupid... Goddamn!
  • Shane Vendrell: The guy was a pain in the ass.
  • Vic Mackey: You're being a huge pain in the ass lately. Should I take a piss on you? You're out of control.
  • Shane Vendrell: You want me out, say the word.
  • Vic Mackey: And don't think I won't!

  • Vic Mackey: We have to find him before he does any harm to them.
  • Suzie Klassen: Well, I can't imagine George would ever hurt Myra or Brady.
  • Vic Mackey: Can you imagine him killing 15 people in cold blood?
  • Suzie Klassen: Well, that's different. I mean, you have to understand. This used to be a nice place to live. Clean, safe. George just got fed up being surrounded by all the spics. Can you blame him?

  • Raoul Jimenez: You arrested the shop owners?
  • Vic Mackey: Brought them in for questioning.
  • Carlos Zamora: Why?
  • Vic Mackey: Their stories didn't make sense.
  • Carlos Zamora: Leon's son died four hours ago. How much sense is he supposed to make?
  • Vic Mackey: If he knows something, we need it.
  • Carlos Zamora: You don't drag a grieving father in here and stick him under the lights!
  • Vic Mackey: And you don't get answers from people by passing around hugs.
  • Carlos Zamora: You don't get them by pissing on people either.

  • Train Guttierez: He had to pay.
  • Carlos Zamora: And who's gonna pay now? Who's gonna pay?!
  • Vic Mackey: We all pay, man. He's gonna pay for the rest of his life. You don't want to. Trust me.

  • Raoul Jimenez: You have something for me?
  • David Aceveda: An IAD file of a current investigation my people are trying to cover up.
  • Raoul Jimenez: Dirty cops? Why give it to me?
  • David Aceveda: You'll see it gets the publicity it deserves.
  • Raoul Jimenez: And if you leak it to the press, it'd look self-serving.
  • David Aceveda: You want it or not?
  • Raoul Jimenez: Of course. Don't worry, David. I'll make sure they spell your name right.
